Are You Desperate To Lose Weight Quickly?

Are you desperate to lose weight quickly? So many people answer 'yes' to that question, and unfortunately the majority of them will never succeed in reaching their goal weight and staying there. Why is that? Simply because in most cases, very fast weight loss isn't permanent.
There are a couple of main reasons for this. One is that in order to lose weight very quickly, you need to basically starve yourself and/or take on an extreme exercise regime, and very few people have the iron willpower needed to keep that up for long. Another reason is that very rapid weight loss is unhealthy, and your body will rebel, by increasing your appetite, stimulating cravings for fatty, sugary foods, and by slowing the metabolism in an effort to preserve fat. As a result, not only can you not continue to lose weight quickly, but the weight is usually gained back soon afterwards. And to add insult to injury, it then becomes harder to lose weight again in the future, because your metabolic rate is now lower, and you've probably also lost some more metabolically-active muscle mass during your crash diet.
So if you're truly desperate to lose weight and to keep it off, forget about losing it as quickly as possible, and instead commit to a sensible plan that will help you to shed the pounds at a steady, sustainable rate. Use that sense of desperation to fuel your resolve. The following steps will help:
- Eat four or five moderately-sized meals a day, as suggested in the Strip That Fat plan. Eating more often helps to keep your metabolism and energy levels up, and stops you getting extremely hungry, which can trigger cravings.
- Base your meals around healthy, natural foods, and eliminate or cut right down on processed foods. Junk foods are loaded with salt, sugar and synthetic flavourings, all of which can over-stimulate the appetite and lead to overeating.
- Take some exercise at least 4-5 days each week. You don't have to hit the gym if that's not your thing - just taking a brisk walk is good.
- Aim to fit some weight training into your exercise plan. The more lean muscle tissue you have, the more fat your body will burn. If you don't want to build bulky muscles (which is actually pretty difficult for most people), just go for light weights and lots of repetitions, rather than very heavy weights and fewer reps.
- Don't fall prey to the lure of diet pills, liposuction and other 'quick fix' measures. Unscrupulous companies take advantage of the desperation felt by many overweight people, and promise that their product will be the answer that will make them finally drop the fat for good. Unfortunately all you usually lose is your money, and sometimes also your health and self-esteem. For lasting, healthy weight loss, a sensible eating plan and regular exercise is the only way to go - boring, but true.
- Set a clear weight loss goal and ask yourself - why do you want to lose the weight? How will being slimmer benefit you, and how will you feel when you get there? Losing weight can be challenging, and you need to have a compelling reason to carry you through the tough times. Also, keep track of your progress, and reward yourself along the way.
- Above all, be nice to yourself. If you beat yourself up about being overweight, you may be more likely to overeat as a way of feeling better. Building new healthy habits can be hard at first, but it does get easier with practice, and you don't have to be 'perfect'. So what if you eat a bit too much one day (or even have a binge), or have something 'bad'? Just get back on the wagon at your next meal and keep going. As time goes on, your body will adapt to its new healthy regime, and you'll begin to genuinely prefer the good quality food you're giving it, and to enjoy the buzz that exercise gives - and then the whole weight loss journey becomes a lot easier. Just be patient with yourself while you're still getting to that point.
If you can avoid the temptation to crash diet the pounds away as quickly as possible, and instead let yourself lose it in a slower, healthier manner, your body will thank you. And you'll also lose that horrible sense of being desperate to lose weight quickly, because you'll be back in control, and will be far less likely to regain the weight - thus escaping that whole depressing yoyo cycle in the future.
